Celebrating Christ in the Chaos of the City
"I've never heard anything like this before."
"This is what I've been looking for."
"When a friend told me about this place, I had to come see for myself."
These are all verbatim statements made at a preview service at City Church in Lagos, Nigeria. City Church prepares to launch in January 2017. Luke Greer (below) had the opportunity to meet the core launch team, to hear their stories, to meet their families, and to hear them say beautiful things about the church.
The city of Lagos is extraordinary: 600,000 people moved there last year alone. The sheer magnitude of the city is almost too much to take in. As one travel guidebook remarks, “Lagos is chaos theory made flesh and concrete.”
Luke's experience – of hearing from real people who are finding new life in a church and of being in a such an overwhelming city – vividly illustrates why Orchard Group does what we do. God loves people. Intensely. So much so that God became one of us.
Lagos is a “city” precisely because it is a concentration of a large number of people, many of whom have yet to hear of God’s love for them. Planting churches in cities like Lagos enables more and more people to encounter and respond to the love of God. Many hear and read the word of God for the first time in church plants. Many learn for the first time that Christ is not merely a religious figure, but God himself who gave up everything to meet their deepest need.
City Church would greatly appreciate your prayers for the team and for the hearts of the people of Lagos! If you'd like to learn more about the church, Femi Osunnuyi shares his vision for the church in this video. If you would like to donate, you can do so at the link below.
